Two tables of stone, written on both sides with the finger of God. Broken by Moses on the mountain, then rewritten and placed within the Ark.

Symbolic meaning

The covenant itself, kept inside the mercy seat's shadow.

Christological significance

The law is not abolished but hidden beneath the mercy seat — kept, yet not exposed apart from mediation.
