Ark of the Covenant
The sacred chest overlaid within and without with pure gold. It held the tablets of the covenant, Aaron's rod that budded, and a pot of manna. Above it, between the wings of the cherubim, God met with Moses.
Symbolic meaning
The throne of the covenant God upon earth. Where the law is kept, but is covered by the mercy seat and the sprinkled blood.
Christological significance
Classically read as a figure of Christ: God enthroned, the law fulfilled and covered, mercy meeting justice at the place of blood.
