Symbolic meaning

The place where wrath and mercy meet. The Hebrew kapporeth means the place of covering.

Christological significance

Paul's word hilastērion (Rom 3:25) is the same as the Septuagint's word for mercy seat. Christ is the covering, and His blood the propitiation.
