The golden lid of the Ark, with two cherubim of beaten gold facing each other, their wings arched over the seat. Here the blood of atonement was sprinkled once a year.
Symbolic meaning
The place where wrath and mercy meet. The Hebrew kapporeth means the place of covering.
Christological significance
Paul's word hilastērion (Rom 3:25) is the same as the Septuagint's word for mercy seat. Christ is the covering, and His blood the propitiation.
