The Second Temple
A house rebuilt — smaller in outward glory, greater in prophetic weight.
Cyrus of Persia decreed that the house should rise again, sixty cubits in height and sixty in breadth (Ezra 6:3). The foundation was laid to weeping from those who remembered Solomon's house, and to shouting from those who did not. It stood without the Ark, without the Urim and Thummim, and without the visible cloud of glory — yet through Haggai the LORD promised, "The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former."
"Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel… and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts" (Hag 2:4). The promised glory was not a visible cloud but the coming of the Desire of Nations.
It was profaned by Antiochus IV in 167 BC, rededicated by the Maccabees, and eventually enveloped and enlarged by Herod's rebuilding.
